Competition Categories

I.              Language Competition

 

Note: Level 1 = 1st year; Level 2 = 2nd year; Level 3 or higher = students with 3 or more years of German.

A.    Skits – Level 1. A group will perform a memorized (including any scene introductions) skit in German.  The skit can be written by students or from some other source; bring a copy of the skit for the judge.  Please limit the performance to 5 minutes.  Use costumes and props.  Criteria: pronunciation, intonation, movement, projection, memorization.

B.    Skits – Level 2. Same as above, but criteria include Level 2 expectations.

C.   Skits – Level 3 or higher. Same as above, but criteria include Level 3 expectations.

D.   Poetry Level 1: At least 6-10 lines, memorized. Try to find a short poem or recite at least a complete stanza of a poem by a German/Austrian/Swiss author.  Criteria: pronunciation, intonation, memorization, delivery (poise, posture, gestures, projection).

E.    Poetry Level 2: Same as above, but at least 11-20 lines.

F.    Poetry Level 3: Same as above, but minimum 20 lines.

G.   Prose Reading Level 1: not memorized, text of about 100 words, maximum 3 minutes.  Criteria: pronunciation, intonation, fluency, delivery (interpretation, poise, posture, gestures).

H.   Prose Reading Level 2: not memorized, text of about 150 words.

I.      Prose Reading Level 3 and higher: not memorized, text of about 250 words.

J.     Situational Role-Play, Level 3 (no levels 1 and 2 this year because of low participation the last two years): Pairs of students will perform an impromptu skit based on a topic taken from the ACTFL guidelines. Students will have 3 minutes to prepare and 3 minutes to perform. Criteria: clarity of communication, pronunciation, variety, creativity.

 

 

II.            Music Competitions

 

K.   Vocal Solos: The student will perform a German song – folk, pop, or classical.  Please bring your music for the judge to look at during your performance.  It will be returned to you immediately after the performance.  Criteria: accuracy of notes and rhythm, tonal accuracy, pronunciation, musicality of presentation, knowledge of the song.  3 minute time limit (which includes set-up time).

L.    Vocal Group: Two or more students will perform a German song – folk, pop, or classical.  Please bring your music for the judge to look at during your performance.  It will be returned to you immediately after the performance.  Criteria: accuracy of notes and rhythm, tonal accuracy, pronunciation, musicality of presentation, knowledge of the song.  3 minute time limit (which includes set-up time).

M.  Instrumental Solos: One student will perform music by a German-speaking composer – folk, pop, or classical. Please bring your music for the judge to look at during your performance.  It will be returned to you immediately after the performance. Criteria: accuracy of notes and rhythm, tonal accuracy, musicality of presentation, knowledge of the piece.

N.   Instrumental Groups: A group of up to 6 students will perform music by a German-speaking composer – folk, pop, or classical. Please bring your music for the judge to look at during your performance.  It will be returned to you immediately after the performance. Criteria same as above.

O.   Dance:  A group of no more than 12 students will perform a German, Austrian, or Swiss dance.  Please bring your own music.  New:  time limit = 5 minutes

 

III.                                               Displays          Criteria for all displays: reflection of culture, creativity, attractiveness, execution (attention to detail, use of color, etc.) Displays have only one level.

Please note:  Students do not have to be present in order to have an item on display.

 

P.    Posters : a creative integration of the theme Germany: Past, Present, Future in a cohesive unit drawing on any aspect of German culture historical themes, pop culture, ect.

Q.   T-Shirt: a creative integration of the theme Germany: Past, Present, Future in a cohesive unit drawing on any aspect of German culture historical themes, pop culture, ect. Must be original designs on a standard T-shirt.  

R.    Gingerbread Houses: Traditional or non-traditional gingerbread constructions of edible materials.

S.    Miscellaneous Arts and Crafts: Relating to Easter in German/Austrian/Swiss cultures.

T.    Video:  Create a short (max. 3 minutes) video introducing points of interest in your area to German  tourists.  The video has to have spoken text in German.

U.    Baking: Bake traditional German, Austrian, or Swiss baked goods. Of course they should NOT have to be refrigerated, and they should be fresh on the day of the contest. Bring your recipe in German, as well as background information (region, traditions, etc.). Criteria: Presentation, adherence to theme/ authenticity, taste, and accuracy of German in the recipe.

   

 

IV.           Tests           Note: All tests are multiple-choice and will be computer-based.

 

V.    Vocabulary Test Level 1: Family, numbers, days of the week, items in a room, colors, food items.

W.  Vocabulary Test Level 2: Common phrases.

X.    Vocabulary Test Level 3 and higher: Short German text with German questions.

Y.    Grammar Test Level 1: verb endings, modals, pronouns, forms of haben and  sein.

Z.    Grammar Test Level 2: prepositions, present perfect tense, accusative and dative, dependent clauses.

AA.         Grammar Test Level 3+: simple past, adj. endings, comparisons, future tense, word order.
